It was back in November when I attended the 3rd Annual Ladies of Urban Sound Against Rape at the Vogue Room. The event was of course very powerful with lots of deep poetry and music. We’ve featured several of the events performers such as Kaysun, Carmela Antonio, Charlena Russel and Latte D. Kyd in previous columns, podcasts and on PulpTV. another one of the artists from that event is sun. sun is an artist in all aspects from poet, to singer/songwriter to canvas etc. etc.

sun is a poet, singer/songwriter, and visual artist that expresses her soul through the arts. Originally born in Corea, she is a strong advocate for positive progressions, equality and humanitarianism.

sun has been writing poetry since the age of 10, has been singing since age 8, composed her first song at age 14, and started rapping in high school. Music for her is a form of release and she pays particular attention to her lyrics, always making a conscious effort to embody a positive message, no matter how negative the topic may be. This is at the core of all of sun’s work, whether it is visual art, music or poetry.

sun not only engages in the arts but in community building. She has two passions: (1)arts/music and (2)building positive change. She has worked with many community organizations in the Jane-Finch, York and Corean Communities in Toronto. She currently volunteers at an after-school program called Lost Lyrics, an alternative education program for 11-14 yr olds in Jane-Finch and Malvern, that uses Hip Hop culture as a way of helping youth define who they are and express knowledge of self.

sun is also the coordinator of JinDap, a group she started, comprised of Corean-Candian Youth Leaders who have felt a lack of connectedness from the Corean Community due to gaps in language, culture, and politics. JinDap aims to bring different young Corean-Canadian Leaders together and bridge these gaps in order to nurture a deeper understanding of thier roots, identities, communities and social justice issues specific to the Corean Diaporic experience. JinDap also strives to expand leadership and community building skills, and networks and solidarity within the Corean community, to create positive social change.

sun has and continues to work with many other organizations and movements that aim to create positive change and build solidarity.

Artistically, sun is multitalented. On stage you will see her perform spoken word, sing, rap, play keys and guitar. She writes all of her lyrics and composes her own songs. sun is also versed in visual arts as well and creates most of her work through mediums such as water colour, acrylic paint, and ink, among others. Her favourite medium to work with at this time, however, is pencil crayon.

sun has performed at many venues around Toronto and has also performed in New York and Kingston. She has been featured on CKLN 88.1 fm and will be featured on CHRY 105.5 fm in the near future.
